Murder/Suicide in Franklin, NY
November 7, 2012
Murders in Delaware County are rare. When they
happen to a respected college professor and a revered
financial analyst living in a carefully-maintained
neighborhood of stately homes characterized by
refinement and decorum, they are especially upsetting and
very, very sad. This is one such case.
Craig DuMond, Delaware County Undersheriff, released the following update regarding the
murder/suicide incident which took place in the Village of Franklin on November 7, 2012:
“At approximately 6:40 AM on Wednesday morning the Delaware County 911 Center received a call
from male subject calling from the Brown residence located at 123 Main Street in the Village of Franklin. The
caller reported that he had killed his wife and would be taking his own life.
A local off-duty Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputy was contacted by 911 and immediately responded to
the scene. Upon arrival, the Deputy discovered both Wendy and Willis Brown, both 58 years of age, deceased
within the residence.
Deputies and members of the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division were assisted at the scene by the
New York State Police, Troop “C”, Forensic Identification Unit.
Investigation and a forensic autopsy have established that Wendy Brown died as a result of a gunshot
wound. The manner of her death has been ruled a homicide.
A forensic autopsy has established that Willis Brown died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
At this time, the motive for this tragic incident remains uncertain.”

The Sheriff’s Office availed itself of two government surplus Humvees having very low mileage.
They will be used for accessing hard-to-get-at mountainous terrain and be deployed for use in flood and
heavy snow events as well. They will also be used by the Drug Enforcement Unit to access marihuana
crops which are sometimes harvested far inland from roadways. We hope to give them a fresh coat of paint
and include them in our parade details as well.
