Property Checks

The property check program is a service provided by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office. This program is for property owners of Delaware County who may not live at this residency Full Time or may be leaving the area for an extended time. This program is designed for a Deputy Sheriff to occasionally go check the property that is not being occupied to ensure nothing has happened to the residency.

If this service is desired, a property owner must complete a Request for Property Check/Release of Liability Form.  On this form, please provide us with as much information as possible with describing the property.  I.e. the structures on the property: the home, storage sheds, garages, barns, campers, trailers, vehicles, or atv/utv’s on the property.  Also, please assure that your address is clearly labeled and is visible from the roadway, as this will assist the deputies with locating your residence. A valid phone number MUST be listed for a contact. If a valid phone number is not working the office will remove you from the list because there is no way to contact someone in case of an emergency.

We ask owners to identify if the property is your primary residence or secondary residence. If this were a primary residence property checks would only be allowed during specific periods that you would be away and the home may be vacant, you would need to indicate the specific time on the sheet. You can indicate this on the form, if your dates may vary please provide a rough estimate and note that you will call or email to notify us of the dates you will need checks completed.

If it were a secondary residence, you would indicate the periods that a check is requested. For example, Dec. thru May, or April 1^st thru June 1^st or we visit regularly during the summer and only need checks done in September-April. 

As you are aware, Delaware County in the winter can be challenging to navigate.  Please note that in the winter time if the driveways are not maintained our deputies will not be able to patrol around the home.

Please note the property check posters state this property is patrolled by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.  This does not signify to others that your property is posted and that there is no trespassing.  Please ensure that you post your property with posted signs to prevent trespassers. If you post your property with posted signs it will allow our officers to then enforce trespassing. If you have questions on how to do this, please feel free to reach out to our Deputies in regards to this.  If you are in need of the property check posters, please contact our office to arrange for the Deputy to put them up or if you would like to come pick them up at our office.
