Gerald Furgerson was hired on January 15, 2002 as an Auto Mechanic at the Solid Waste Management Center.  On December 5, 2005 he transferred to the Delhi Shop.

Gerry was promoted to Senior Automotive Mechanic on July 31, 2006.  This promotion placed Gerry in charge of the Mechanics who handle the fleet maintenance on all of the Department of Public Works’ (DPW) heavy equipment.  He supervises the daily activities of the heavy equipment repair shop, determines priority for repairs, oversees the stock room and observes, inspects and approves completed jobs.  He also makes recommendations for equipment purchases.

According to Wayne Reynolds, Commissioner of Public Works, “Gerry works very well with others and is able to prioritize the work and keep the employees moving.  He has worked with the Parts Clerk to update DPW’s parts inventory so that it is more efficient.  After the loss of DPW’s Motor Equipment Maintenance Supervisor in December, 2009, Gerry stepped up and performed a lot of that work without ever asking for extra compensation.  The Department has leaned on Gerry several times for information that would normally have come from the Motor Equipment Maintenance Supervisor, and he has come through time after time.  He is always willing to come in and do whatever is needed to keep the Department going.  It is for these reasons that I nominate Gerry for Employee of the Month.”

Gerry says what he likes most about his job is that every day brings different challenges.  He also likes helping with the machinery budget.

Gerry and his wife, Betsy, have a son, David, who is in college and a daughter, Holly, who is attending school.  Gerry’s hobbies include being Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts, snowmobiling and cooking.
