HEALTH & WELLNESS

The Delaware County Office for the Aging sponsors health and wellness programs that Delaware County senior citizens (residents 60 years of age or older) can attend.  Currently we offer “A Matter of Balance” and Tai Chi for Arthritis.  A senior fitness directory listing places where seniors can exercise has been recently updated and is available upon request. Each fall the agency generates a listing of all flu shot clinics that are available to county residents. Please keep tuned here for news and call the office for complete information about any of these programs.  More details of “A Matter of Balance” and Tai Chi for Arthritis programs are listed below.

A MATTER OF BALANCE

"A Matter of Balance" is an award winning evidence based health and wellness program, involving 8 two hour sessions for a small group of seniors who are concerned about falls and:

  • Have sustained falls in the past
  • Restrict activities because of concerns about falling
  • Are interested in improving flexibility, balance and strength
  • Are age 60 or older, ambulatory and able to problem solve

This nationally recognized program was developed at the Roybal Center for Enhancement of Late-Life Function at Boston University. The program is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. During the class, participants learn to:

  • View falls as controllable
  • Set goals for increasing activity
  • Make changes to reduce fall risk at home
  • Exercise to increase strength and balance

If you are interested in having this program offered in your community, contact the Office for the Aging at 607-832-5750.

TAI CHI FOR ARTHRITIS

Tai Chi for Arthritis is an 8 week evidence based exercise program, involving 16 one hour sessions for a group of seniors interested in a safe low impact exercise that works on the core muscles and breathing.  Due to the fluid movements of the exercise, it is a safe form of exercise for individuals with arthritis but of great benefit to all.

This program:

  • Improves balance and coordination
  • Increases flexibility and range of motion
  • Strengthens muscles through weight-bearing movements
  • Improves cardio-respiratory function through breathing technic
  • Relieves stress
  • Improves concentration and memory

If you are interested in having this program offered in your community, contact the Office for the Aging at 607-832-5750.
