Q: What
is the Consumer Directed Program?
A:
The Consumer Directed Program is a
program for individuals with
disabilities, in which the individual is
the coordinator of one's own home health
care services. The program is covered by
Medicaid and allows the individual to
perform the duties that are normally
carried out by a Home Health Care
Agency. The individual is responsible
for the selection of their aides, and
the supervision of what services those
aides will provide. Under this program
one's own family members (with the
exception of a spouse, son, daughter,
son-in-law, or daughter-in-law) can be
paid for caregiving services that they
provide to their loved ones. For
Delaware County, the agency that
administers this program is the Office
for Long Term Care which is located in
Delhi.

Family caregivers often get burned out
and are not sure where to turn for help
and support. Are there any programs in
the county that are specifically there
to help caregivers balance their life
and their caregiving role?
A:
Delaware County Office for the Aging has a Family Caregiver Support
Program (Legacy Program) that
provides information, assistance, and
volunteers who provide respite care for
caregivers. Counseling services for more
complex relationship issues are
available from several agencies such as
