Catskill Rural AIDS Service is an independent volunteer organization serving Delaware and Otsego counties in central New York. CRAS provides educational programs and support services for people living with AIDS and their families, through a network of local volunteers.

The Office for the aging uses volunteers to run their medical transportation program. This program assists elders in need of transportation to access health related services such as regularly scheduled doctor’s appointments and pharmaceutical services.

The agency contracts with the Delaware County Office for the Aging and provides home delivered meals to county residents, 60 years of age and older and their spouses. This program is operated using volunteer drivers for the delivery of meals to home bound elderly. Delaware Opportunities also has Food Banks throughout the county and they use volunteers to staff the food banks. For further information call the office. Volunteers are also needed for the Big Buddy Program, mentoring youth ages 5-16 years of age, for the Senior Dining Program, as hotline volunteers for the domestic violence and sexual assault hot line (volunteers answer the phone from their own home), and in Head Start Centers serving as teacher aides in working with 3 and 4 year old children.

Volunteers are at the heart of the mission. Volunteers first began the work of meeting the challenge of HI V/AIDS in the community. They were the “Friends Who Care,” supporting those infected and affected by HI V/AIDS in the face of indifference, fear, and discrimination. Their dedicated work resulted in the creation of Southern Tier AIDS Program. Volunteers are still “Friends Who Care,” bringing their skills, compassion and commitment to all work that is done. Volunteers work with staff, board members and people still living with HIV to make a real difference in the community and in the lives of people living with HI V/AIDS.
