AVRE (formerly known as Blind Work Association) provides a variety of services to seniors with age-related vision loss, including training in independent living skills, Orientation and Mobility, using assistive devices, and offers support groups.

Provides access to eye care from a nationwide network of volunteer ophthalmologists for those without a means to pay. Seniors, who are US citizens or legal residents, 65 or older, and have not seen an ophthalmologist within the last three years are eligible to receive a comprehensive medical examination and treatment for up to one year. Ophthalmologist’s fees are covered; however, eyeglasses, prescriptions, hospital services and fees of other medical professionals are not covered.

Vision USA program for free eye exams and the New Eyes for the Needy program for free lenses and frames are available to eligible, low-income families who have no vision insurance. Rural Health Network assists individuals applying for these programs. Eye exams and glasses are provided by local participating volunteer optometrists.
