A Message from Delaware County
OFA Director
Over thirty years ago, when I first
came to the Delaware County Office for the Aging, there were few choices for
family members who needed assistance in caring for loved ones. There was a
scattering of private duty aides available for hire and a garden variety of
different levels of nursing home care. That was it! When people became infirm it
was likely that if the family couldn’t bear the burden, their next and final
stop would be a nursing home.
Now, because of the development of a significant
assortment of supportive services and technological advances, infirm persons of
all ages are more likely to be able to remain in their own homes. This
proliferation of long term care programs has done much to improve the quality of
life of the most vulnerable of our friends, relatives and neighbors.
Unfortunately it has also led to a much more confusing and duplicative service
landscape.
With the Delaware County NY CONNECTS initiative, all of
the area’s service providers that offer long term care assistance have been
brought together to create a more efficient and user friendly supportive care
environment. This resource directory is an integral part of this process.
Through the hard work of NY CONNECTS Coordinator, Laura Stewart and the many
partners who have joined in this effort, we feel that this document will serve
as an effective tool in helping county residents and professionals in making the
best possible decisions as they respond to long term care challenges.
